About this group
The St Kew Parish Hall renewable energy project is a joint venture between the parish hall committee and St Kew Pre-School to install solar PV panels onto the roof of the parish hall. It's aim is to reduce the carbon footprint of the building and to make running and heating costs more affordable and sustainable for the parish hall and the pre school.
St Kew Parish Hall is a beautiful rural community building, well used and well loved by the local community. It was re-roofed and fully refurbished just 2 years ago, after much fundraising and a successful heritage lottery grant application. This allowed the roof to be fully overhauled and properly insulated, and double glazed windows to be fitted.
As well as being home to the local pre-school every weekday, it hosts a myriad of community activities and events, from monthly parish council meetings to weekly country dancing classes to children's parties and wedding receptions.
This will enable the parish hall to upgrade the current inefficient heating system to cool-touch electric radiators, which can be run from the solar PV panels. The expensive coin meters which currently power the heating and lighting can then be removed, greatly reducing the running costs for the pre-school, which is the main day-time user of the hall, and of course all other groups also using the building.
For the pre-school, this will bring a vital reduction in day-to-day running costs. As a small rural pre-school, continued rises in energy prices has meant that heating the hall has become more and more expensive and now accounts for a large proportion of total running costs.
The installation of solar PV panels will not only reduce energy bills but also allow the parish hall committee to offset the cost of energy needed to heat and light the hall with the income generated from the Feed-In-Tariff, therefore passing these savings onto the hall users in the form of free electricity.
This will allow the pre school - and all other users - to benefit from the free electricity produced and in turn reduce their overheads and safeguard their future sustainability.
A lovely warm building, a happy and growing pre-school, financial and environmental sustainability for local groups and services - this is what we hope to achieve from the The St Kew Parish Hall renewable energy project.
