About this group
We are seeking funding to improve the energy efficiency of the village hall which has always been the focus of village life in Spofforth
The hall, built in 1927, is no longer able to balance its income and expenditure. The Parish Council who act as Trustees for the hall are reluctant to increase rental rates and we remain adamant that this facility must be retained at all costs for the benefit of future generations. We are therefore seeking to do all we can to reduce utility overheads by introducing renewable energy sources.
Despite our primary interest being focussed on the money saving aspect of energy efficiency, it’s hard to avoid getting involved in the whole environmental idea along the way. We believe that there is an obvious synergy between community energy projects and wider moves towards local sustainability. Coming together as a community to work for a common energy efficiency project is also a powerful force for community cohesion. For any community or group which has already begun trying to reduce its collective energy use and – by implication – its carbon footprint, it is a very short step to going a little further and looking for other ways to achieve a generally lower impact on the environment. We promote this on our village website (www.spofforthvillage.org.uk) where we have a page dedicated to Sustainable Spofforth providing hints and tips around energy conservation, home insulation and recycling.
