This Guide is produced by the Portobello and Leith group - to give people tips on saving energy at home, written by energy experts. The booklet answers some frequently asked questions and suggests a range of ways you can make your home more energy efficient – from using energy saving products to changing the way you run your home, and from installing insulation to generating your own renewable energy.
There are lots of tips with checklists in this booklet for you to record what you’ve looked at and done. We’ve included actions that are appropriate for older houses and tenements, as well as newly built ones.
Read the handbook below, and you can download a PDF version here.

Hi Carolina-Mandolina,
I have the spreadsheets here but can't send you them as don't have your e-mail address. However, they were downloaded form the DECC website statistics page which gives information on emissions from the domestic, industrial and transport sector by local authority area - see http://www.decc.gov.uk/en/content/cms/statistics/local_auth/co2_las/co2_las.aspx
The stats for residents of cities tend to be lower than national averages I think because residents in rural areas have to travel further (and less by public transport), also heating homes in urban areas is often less necessary as homes are on top of / beside each other whereas they are less likely to be in rural areas. Land use may also be considered, where again the rural areas will score poorly in comparison to urban as forestry and agriculture tend to have high carbon emissions (though of course urban areas rely on these industries too). Anyway, you can have a look for yourself.
The accompanying report can be found here - http://www.decc.gov.uk/assets/decc/statistics/climate_change/localauthorityco2/458-local-regional-co2-2005-2008-main-rpt.pdf
Is there a reference list available for this? I'm interested in checking the report which quotes the average carbon footprint of Edinburgh citizens as 7.3, it's listed as DECC 2008, but doesn't give the name of the report. 7.3 seems pretty low, so I'm wondering if that includes infrastructure etc...?
Hi there,
Good idea! There's now a link to the PDF version at the top of the Guide too.
Is it possible to download this as a pdf, please. Better than a paper copy, even though we live in portobello.
