About this group
Hyson Green Youth Club is a registered charity situated in an inner-city area of Nottingham. We own a purpose built youth centre constructed early 1960's which at present does not have any green features but has sites suitable for solar panels. This project will explore the cost effectiveness of erecting solar panels in order to generate electricity for use and to sell surplus to the national grid creating income. It will also explore other sustainable technologies - such as the most energy-efficient replacement for our very ancient boiler - and produce a menu of green options with the costings to increase our energy efficiency and reduce our running costs. For example we will remove the asbestos roof and insulate to retain heat, and replace the boiler. We have consulted with young people and some would like to be involved in planning and design of improvements to the building. Through this practical project we can educate young people about sustainable technologies and involve them in making participatory budgeting decisions about green options suitable for their youth club.
